Economy: Promoting Sound Growth
Arlington’s smart growth planning is the foundation of our economic sustainability. The successful integration of land use and transportation investment has led to the hugely successful creation of our two primary metro corridors – the Rosslyn-Ballston and Jefferson-Davis corridors.
While we have created a vibrant and well-balanced economy, we are not immune from the effects of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) decisions, the likely reduction in federal spending, or regional competition. As Chair in 2005, I led Arlington's effort to challenge the BRAC recommendations of the Secretary of Defense. With large job losses projected, I strongly supported our effort to re-plan Crystal City.
We must continue to aggressively seek new businesses, large and small. If density is provided to incentivize redevelopment, we must ensure that an appropriate value of benefits accrue to the community. And we must continue to make the necessary investments in transportation, education and technology and energy infrastructure to ensure our long term economic sustainability.
